deep brain structures Flashcards
Where is medulla oblongata found
Brain stem
What system is medulla oblongata part of and what does it control
Part of the autonomic nervous system and control involuntary processes
What is found in the medulla oblongata
- Cardiac control centre
- Vasomotor centre
- Respiratory centre
What does cardiac control centre do
Regulates heart rate
What does Vasomotor centre do
Regulates circulation and blood pressure. Can increase or decrease blood pressure and can cause blood to go more to certain areas.
What does respiratory centre do
Controls breathing
What is limbic system comprised of
Thalamus, basal ganglia, hippocampus and hypothalamus
What does the thalamus do
Receives sensory information and directs it to the appropriate areas of the brain
What does the basal ganglia do
Involved in deciding which movements the brain carries out
What does the hippocampus do
Involved in long term memory
What does the hypothalamus do
Monitors and controls bodily functions like temperature
What do the sensory receptors in the hypothalamus do
Detect changes in the temperature and water potential of the blood
How does the hypothalamus bring about its responses
Using hormones released in the pituitary gland
What are the 2 parts of the pituitary gland
Posterior and anterior
What is the posterior pituitary made up of
Neurosecretory cells that have their cell bodies in the hypothalamus
