Positive and negative feedback Flashcards
Define negative feedback
The body’s mechanism for reversing a change so that it returns back to the optimum
How is the optimum point for the body monitored
By receptors
What happens when receptors detect a change away from the optimum
They send signals to a co-ordinator
What does a co-ordiantor do when it receives a signal
It then decides which response is appropriate and carries it out by sending signals to effectors
What do effectors do when they receive signals from the co-ordinator
They bring about change that returns the internal conditions to their optimum
What is the opposite of negative feedback
Positive feedback
Describe positive feedback
Any change away from a set point is increased
What does the positive feedback mechanism bring about
A large unstable change in the body
When is positive feedback useful
In neurones
