Prevents onset of disease
What is secondary prevention
Prevents worsening of disease
What are the differences between individual and population wide approaches to primary prevention
Population: larger number of people
tackles all level of risk
shifts the mean for risk factors
Individual:
More specific
No distrust of media - could be construed as propaganda
What is the difference between health improvement, protection and prevention
Improvement = safer communities, better housing, promote + enhance health Prevention = screening, immunisation Protection = condoms, seat belts, mosquito nets

medical model = reducing risk factors
behavioural model = healthy lifestyles
empowerment model = knowledge and skills
social change model = communities working together
environment model = create environments conducive to health
What are the three E’s for promoting health
Environment, empowerment, engagement
What may hinder the effectiveness of primary prevention initiatives?
Barriers = lack of knowledge, time, motivation
Systemic factors = poverty, literacy, family pressures, culture/religion/access
