Health related behaviours, beliefs and attitudes Flashcards
What are the three of health behaviours
Risky, promoting, illness related
Give an example of how health behaviours can be independent and unstable
Independent (running + smoking)
Unstable (start smoking, stop running)
What are the determinants of health behaviour
Social factors Reinforcement value Symptoms Emotional factors Cognitive factors
How are social factors determinants of health behaviour
Observational learning at home
Culture/legistlation (taxation)
peer pressure
How is reinforcement value a determinant of health behaviour
Risky behaviours have immediate positive reinforcement
Started at a time when healthy
How are symptoms determinants of health behaviour
Positive reinforcement (feeling social) Negative reinforcement (wanting to avoid withdrawal) Can act as cues for behaviour cessation (cough for smoking)
How are emotions determinants of health behaviour
Negative reinforcement = want to avoid negative emotions
Positive reinforcement = exercise in response to stress
What is the intention behaviour gap
The difference between what we want to do and what we actually do - we aren’t rational, have habits etc.
How to overcome the behaviour gap
With an action plan (who, what, where, when, why) - cues behaviour into conscious awareness
