Pressure and Flow Physiology Flashcards
What is compliance of a vessel?
Vessel’s ability to accommodate blood flow.
Compliance definition
C= V/P
Veins synonmous with
Preload
Arterioles synonymous with
TPR and Afterload
Which has greater compliance: arteries or veins?
Veins
What affects blood flow in a vessel?
radius of the vessel/ higher the radius, higher the flow. r^4
resistance- inversely proportional to low.
Which has the following greatest total cross sectional area? (arteries, aorta, capillaries)
capillaries
What’s the relationship between cross sectional area and flow?
greatest cross area- low flow velocity
low cross area - high flow velocity
Which blood vessel is regulator of total peripheral resistance?
arterioles
In series: does the blood flow change?
No- its the same throughout the circuit
What does viscosity mean?
thickness of the blood, higher thickness (polycythemia) lower velocity of blood flow.
Where are the baroreceptors located?
Carotid Sinus and the aortic arch
What are the causes of hypotension with bradycardia? (they should have tachycardia)
neurogenic shock, iatrogenic (beta blocker), carotid sinus sensitivity
What’s the function of carotid and aortic body chemoreceptors?
respond to chronic hypoxia
What is the defintion of orthostatic hypotension?
drop of >20 in SBP, drop in 10> DBP from sitting to standing
