Why did the Prophet (PBUH) travel to Taif, and what happened there?
- After Abu Talib’s death, the Prophet (PBUH) lost clan protection as Abu Lahab became the chief of Quraish.
- He went to Taif to invite the Banu Saqeef tribe to Islam.
- The three chiefs rejected his message, ordered people to drive him out, and he was severely injured by stones.
- He took refuge in an orchard, where Angel Jibrail offered to destroy Taif, but the Prophet (PBUH) forgave them and prayed for their guidance.
In which year did the first group from Yathrib accept Islam, and what did they do?
- In the 11th year of Prophethood (620 A.D.), six pilgrims from the Khazraj tribe of Yathrib accepted Islam after hearing the Prophet’s (PBUH) teachings.
- They promised to spread Islam in Yathrib among their people.
When did the First Pledge of Aqabah take place, and how many people participated?
- In the 12th year of Prophethood (621 A.D.), twelve men from Yathrib met the Prophet (PBUH) and took the First Pledge of Aqabah.
- Five had already accepted Islam in the previous year, and two were from the Aws tribe.
What were the terms of the First Pledge of Aqabah?
The twelve men pledged to:
- Associate nothing with Allah.
- Not steal, commit fornication, slay offspring, utter slanders, or disobey the Prophet (PBUH) in what is right.
- Lead a righteous life believing in one Allah.
- This was known as the “Pledge of Women” (Bay’at al-Nisa) because it did not include fighting
Quote: “We pledge our allegiance to the Messenger of Allah that we would associate nothing with Allah, that we would neither steal, nor commit fornication, nor slay our offspring, nor utter slanders; and that we would not disobey him in that which is right.”
- Who was sent to Yathrib after the First Pledge of Aqabah, and for what purpose?
- The Prophet (PBUH) sent Mus’ab bin Umair with them to recite the Quran and teach Islam to the residents of Yathrib.
When did the Second Pledge of Aqabah take place, and how many people participated?
- In the 13th year of Prophethood (622 A.D.), 73 men and 2 women from Yathrib came to take the Second Pledge of Aqabah.
What were the terms of the Second Pledge of Aqabah?
- Listen and obey the Prophet (PBUH).
- Spend in plenty and in scarcity for Islam.
- Enjoin good and forbid evil.
- Fear no one but Allah.
- Defend the Prophet (PBUH) and lay down their lives for Islam.
- Invite the Prophet (PBUH) to Yathrib and pledge full support.
What did Bara, the chieftain of Yathrib, say while pledging allegiance?
- “O Messenger of Allah, we swear by the One who sent you with the truth that we will protect you just as we protect our families.
- Accept our pledge, for we are warriors, equipped with weapons passed down through generations.”
What was the Prophet’s (PBUH) response to the Second Pledge of Aqabah?
- “I am yours and you are mine. Whom you war against, him I war against.
- Whom you make peace with, him I make peace with.”
- This pledge is known as Bay’at al-Harb (Pledge of War) because it included defending the Prophet (PBUH).
What happened after the Second Pledge of Aqabah?
- The Quraish increased their persecution of the Muslims, so the Prophet (PBUH) allowed his companions to secretly migrate to Yathrib, with families leaving one by one.
How did the Quraish react after the Muslims started migrating?
- The Quraish plotted to kill the Prophet (PBUH).
- Abu Jahl proposed a plan in Dar-un-Nadwa (Council Hall): one man from each tribe would attack the Prophet (PBUH) simultaneously so that his clan could not retaliate.
How was the Prophet (PBUH) informed of the Quraish’s plan, and what did he do?
- Allah informed the Prophet (PBUH) of the plot.
- He told Ali (RA) to sleep in his bed while he left unnoticed. He was accompanied by Abu Bakr (RA) on his journey to Yathrib (Hijrah).
