Plants and Tissue Part 2 Flashcards
What are apical meristem?
located at the tip of the stem, growth is primary (growth in length)
What are intercalary meristem?
located middle of the stem, between tip and base
growth in primary
What are lateral meristem?
located at the side of the stem, growth is secondary (grows in width)
What is a cambium?
layer of meristematic tissue
What are the two types of cambium?
vascular cambium, cork cambium
What is vascular cambium?
produces more vascular tissue, located between xylem and phloem
What is cork cambium?
produces cork, located outside the phloem
What are cork cells?
dead cells that replace the epidermis in stems and roots for woods, they provide protection and prevent water loss
What are dermal tissue?
forms the epidermis
What is the epidermis?
outer covering of a plant, outer wall is covered by cuticle
What are trichomes?
look like hair spikes, give leaves a fuzzy appearance also acting as protection, keep plants cool by reflecting light
What are root hairs?
they are fragile extensions of root epidermis cells, they increase the surface area of absorption for water and minerals
