Photosynthesis P2 Flashcards
What is the light dependant reaction?
first phase of photosynthesis where light energy is converted into chemical energy (ATP, NADPH)
What is the light independant reaction?
also known as the calvin cycle, and takes chemical energy from phase 1 and turns it into gluecose
What are chloroplasts?
organelles that capture light and contain thylakoids and stroma
What are thylakoids?
flat saclike membranes located in the chloroplats
Where are thylakoids stored?
arranged in stacks called grana
What are grana?
location of light independant reaction
What are chlorophyll?
light absorbing pigments
What are stroma?
fluid filled spaces outside the grana
What does the stroma do?
It is the location of phase 2 light independant reactions
What are the two types of light dependant reactions?
Electron transport and chemiosmosis
What is ferrodoxin?
a protein that photosystem one electron transfers to
What are factors that effect photosynthesis?
light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration, temperature
What are photosystems?
complex proteins
What do the thylakoid membranes hold?
photosystems and electron transporting molecules
