Cell Cycle Regulation Flashcards
What is cyclin?
a protein that regulates the cell cycle
What are the two different cyclin?
protein cyclins and enzyme cyclin (CDK)
How does cancer form?
uncontrolled growth and divison of cells, failure in the regulation of cell cycle
What phase do cancer cells spend less time in?
Interphase
What are carcinogens?
substances that are known to cause cancer
What is apoptosis?
the process in which a cell that is no longer needed commits suicide
How many cells die from apoptosis?
between 50 and 70 billion cells die each day due to apoptosis in the average human adult. Between 20 to 30 billion for children
What are the two types of stem cells?
Embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells
What are embryonic stem cells?
they are pluripotent stem cells that come from embryos
What are the advantages of embryonic stem cells?
capable of turning into any cell or tissue
What are the disadvantages of embryonic stem cells?
their research is controversial as there are concerns about where they come from
What are adult stem cells?
they are found in the body after embryonic development
What are some disadvantages of adult stem cells?
have caused patients with eye problems to go blind, have resulted in abnormal growth of organs when injected, have created clones but not long lasting
