Plant Evolution and Adaptations Flashcards
What are the 5 characteristics that multicellular land plants and green algae share?
Cell wall composed of cellulose, cell division including cell plate, same type of chlorophyll, similar genes for rRNA, food stored as starch, same type of enzymes in cellular vesicles
What are the 5 adaptations?
cuticle, stomata, vascular tissues, seeds, reproductive strategies
What is cuticle?
a fatty or waxy coating that helps prevent water evaporation from plant tissues
What is stomata?
openings in the outer cell layer of leaves that enable gas exchange
What is vascular tissues?
specialized transport tissues that enable faster movement of substances than by osmosis or diffusion
What are reproductive strategies?
some land plants can reproduce with spores that have water protective covering
What are spores?
Spores are haploid cells that can produce an organism without reproduction
What do seeds do?
embryo, nutrients for the embryo, protective coat
What is dominant in vascular and non vascular plants?
In nonvascular plants, gametophyte is dominant. In vascular plants, sporophyte is dominant
