Introduction to Plant Reproduction Flashcards
What is vegetative reproduction?
It’s an asexual way of reproduction where new plants grow from existing plants
What are advantages of vegetative reproduction?
It is a faster way to grow plants compared to seeds; some fruits also don’t have seeds so vegetative reproduction is the only way for them to grow
Give examples of vegetative reproduction
mosses; and strawberry plants with “stolon”
What is archegonia?
female reproduction organ produced by the gametophyte in moss reproduction cycle
What’s the difference between antheridium and archegonium?
archegonium produces one or more eggs while antheridium produces flagellated sperms
What is chemotaxis?
the response when chemicals released by archegonium attract the sperms
What is zygote?
first cell of the sporophyte when sperm fertalizes egg
What is protonema?
a small thread like structure that develops into a gametophyte
Which stage is dominant in moss reproduction?
Gametophyte
Which stage is dominant in ferm reproduction?
Sporophyte
What are fronds?
photosynthetic leaves in sporophyte stage
What is sporangia?
spore producing structures
What is prothallus?
tiny-heart shaped gametophyte
What is the dominant stage in conifer reproduction?
sporophyte
Explain heterosporous conifers
they produce male and female spores that develop into gametophytes
