Chapter 211 Lesson 2-3-4 Flashcards
What are differences between vascular and non vascular plants?
Vascular have xylem and phloem, non vascular lack them, vascular is tall in size, non vascular is short. Vascular dominant stage is sporophyte, non vascular it’s gametophye. Vascular have true root stems and leaves, non vascular lack them. Vascular reproduces by seeds and spores, non vascular reproduce only by spores.
What is bryophyta division?
most familiar are mosses, also called pioneer plants. They produce root like multicellular rhizoids that anchor them down to soil. They grow in damp environements
What are division anthocerophyta?
they are the smallest division, also called hornworts because of the hornlike sporophyte that pops out at the top of the plant. The gametophyte is anchored to soil by rhizoids. they share a characteristic with algae
What does Anthocerophyte share with algae?
each cell has one large chloroplast instead of many
What is division hepaticophyta?
they are called liverworts, because of how they look and they are used as medicine for liver. they grow in moist shady environements. they have unicellular rhizoids
What are some advantages that vascular plants have over non vascular plants?
they have the ability to grow in many environments, and they have strong stems that allow them to grow tall and receive more sunlight
What are the two seedless vascular plants?
Lycophyta and Pterophyta
What make the seedless vascular plants?
club mosses and ferns
What is strobilus?
adaptation seen in seedless vascular plants
compact cluster of spore bearing structure
What is division lycophyta?
they are club mosses
their reproductive structures produces spores that are club shaped or spike shaped
What are epiphytes?
tropical lycophytes that live anchored to an object or plant
What is division pterophyta?
they are ferns and horsetails
ferns sporophyte produces roots and a think underground structure called rhizome
What are fronds?
photosynthetic leaves that are part of sporophyte generation with branched vascular tissues
What are horsetails?
contains scratchy substance called silica
grows in wet areas
What are angiosperms and gymnosperms?
angiosperms: seeds are part of their fruits
gymnosperms: seeds are not part of their fruits
