Plant Structure (flowers) Flashcards
What is the xylem
Dead cells transport water through it
What is the phloem
Living cells transport food through out the cells
Food=phloem
Seeds of the equivalent to a
Fertilized egg
What is the main male flower part called
Stamen
The main female flower part called
Pistil
What are the two parts of the stamen
Anthers and filaments
What is the anther
Carry the pollen
What is the filament
Support the anther
What are the three parts of the Pestil
Stigma style ovary
What is the stigma
Sticky surface at the top of the pistil it traps and holds the pollen
What is the style
Tubelike structure that holds up the stigma: it leads down to the ovary
What is the ovary
Contains the ovules (eggs) after fertilization the ovules become the seeds and provide food
What are the petals
Attract pollinators
What are the sepals
Green petal like parts of the base of the flower
Protect the developing bud
What happens when pollination occurs
Pollen moves from the mail parts to the female parts (anther to stigma/pistil)
Pollen grains land on the stigma and a tiny tube grows from it and it down the style into the ovary
What happens when fertilization occurs internally
The fertilized of you will becomes the seed and the ovary becomes the fruit
What are angiosperms
Enclosed seed
Abundant
Last to evolve
What are gymnosperms
Any vascular plant that reproduces by means of an exposed seed or ovule as opposed to an angiosperm or flowering plant the seeds are enclosed by mature ovaries are fruits
Naked seeds
What is the vascular tissue
Water and minerals enter through the root of the plant and move through the vascular tissue
