Anatomy Flashcards
Closed circulatory system
Blood is always contained within blood vessels
Earth worm, human
What is a circulatory system
Transports material within the organism
What are the 2 types of closed circulatory systems
Single loop circulatory system
1 atrium so there is no oxygenated blood
Double loop circulatory system
Larger heart to pump more complex material and oxygen
Organs of the circulatory system
Heart
Blood vessels
Blood
Function of the circulatory system
Transports oxygen nutrients (including glucose) hormones, wastes, etc. to all parts of the body
Arteries
Carey blood away from ventricles of heart most are high in oxygen
Capillaries
Small thin sites exchange substances between blood and body cells
Veins
Carry blood toward ventricle of heart. Most are low in oxygen
Path of blood through the circulatory system
Step 1
Blood is used in the body and uses its oxygen
Path of blood through the circulatory system
Part 2
Deoxygenated blood returns through the inferior and superior vena cava into the right atrium
Path of blood through the circulatory system
Step 3
The right ventricle pumps blood to the lungs through the pulmonary artery
Path of blood through the circulatory system
Step 4
Newly oxygenated blood returns to the heart through the pulmonary vein in the left atrium
Path of blood through the circulatory system
Step 6
The left ventricle pumps newly oxygenated blood back to the body through the aorta
Open circulatory system
Blood (transport medium) is not always enclosed in blood vessels but may flow directly into body spaces
