Ecosystem Vocabulary Flashcards
Autotrophs
An organism that is able to form nutritional organic substances from simple inorganic substances such as carbon dioxide
Producer
An autotrophic organism capable of producing complex organic compounds from simple inorganic molecules through the process of photosynthesis(using sunlight energy) or through chemosynthesis (chemical energy)
Primary consumers
Usually herbivores, feeding on plants and fungi (heterotrophs, animals)
Secondary consumers
Mainly carnivore and prey on other animals. Omnivores who feed on both plants and animals can be considered a secondary consumer. (animal, heterotrophs, carnivores)
Herbivores
An animal that feeds mainly or only on plants (primary consumers)
Decomposers
An organism, usually a bacterium or fungus, that breaks down the cells of dead plants and animals into simpler substances
