Plant Cell Organisation Flashcards
Plant organs are made out of tissues, what are all the examples of plant tissues (5)
- epidermal tissues
- palisade mesophyll tissue
- spongy mesophyll tissue
- xylem and phloem
- meristem tissue
What is the epidermal tissue
It covers the whole plant
What is the palisade mesophyll tissue
It is the part of the leaf where most photosynthesis happens
What is the spongy mesophyll tissue
It is also in the leaf, it contains big air spaces to allow gases to diffuse in and out of cells
Xylem and phloem
They transport things like water, mineral ions and food around the plant (through roots, stems and leaves)
Meristem tissue
It is found at the growing tips of shoots and roots and is able to differentiate into lots of different types of plant cell, allowing the plant to grow
Label the leaf organ
What is the job of the waxy cuticle
Helps to reduce water loss via evaporation
What is the job of the upper epidermis
It is transparent so that light can pass through it to the palisade layer
What is the palisade layer
- it has lots of chloroplasts which helps with photosynthesis
- it is positioned at the top of the leaf where it can get the most light
What is the job of the xylem and phloem
- form a network of vascular bundles which deliver water and other nutrients to the entire leaf and take away the glucose produced by photosynthesis
- they also help support the structure
How is the lower epidermis adapted for gas exchange
- has little holes called stomata, which let CO2 diffuse directly into the leaf
What is the job of the guard cells
They open and close the stomata in response to environmental conditions
What is the job of the air spaces
Increase rate of diffusion of gases
