Biodiversity Flashcards
What is biodiversity
The variety of all different species of organisms on earth, or within an ecosystem
What do great biodiversities ensure
- stability of ecosystems
- reducing dependence of one species on another for food
- shelter
- the maintenance of the physical environment
How do we protect biodiversity
- protection of rare habitats
- Breeding programmes
- Government action
- agricultural practices
How does protection of habitats protect biodiversity
- legislations to protect rare species means that government takes action to stop poachers, factory waste and other harmful things from harming a habitat contains high biodiversity
How do breeding programmes protect biodiversity
- restore endangered species to sustainable population
- captive breeding in zoos
- they monitor genetic diversity to avoid inbreeding
- possibility of releases into natural habitat
How can agricultural practises help protect biodiversity
- hedgerows provide habitats for nesting birds and pollinators
- they reduce soil erosion because they act as windbreaks
- designate some areas for hedgerows and wildflowers
How does government action protect biodiversity
- government action to reduce carbon emissions
- e.g. Uk climate change act 2008
- revenue from ecotourism
- government collaboration with transport and industry to reduce carbon emissions
Why are there draw backs to maintaining biodiversity
- Costs of programmes
- Effects on local economy
- Protecting food security
- Affects the development of society
What is the problem with costs of programmes
- protect biodiversity costs money
- e.g. government pay farmers a subsidy to reintroduce hedgerows
- conflict in whether to spend it on biodiversity or save it
What is the problem of the effect on the local community in protecting biodiversity
- may affect people’s livelihoods
- e.g. people employed in tree-felling industry may become unemployed
- effecting local community, forcing people to move elsewhere to find work
What is the effect on protecting food security in protecting biodiversity
- certain pests are killed by farmers to protect crops and livestock
- resulting in knock on effects in the food chain and local biodiversity
What is the problem with the development of society in relation to protecting biodiversity
- developing place effects the environment
- sometimes land is in high demand but is untouched due to it’s high biodiversity
- stunting society development
