Homeostasis Flashcards
1
Q
DEFINE homeostasis
A
Maintaining a stable internal environment. e.g. body temp at 37’C, water levels, blood levels
2
Q
Why is homeostasis important
A
Your cells need the right conditions in order to function properly
3
Q
What 3 main components help maintain a steady condition
A
- receptors
- Coordination centres (brain, spinal cord and pancreas)
- Effectors
4
Q
What does negative feedback do
A
Counteracts change
5
Q
How does negative feedback work
A
When the level of something (e.g. temp or water) gets too high or too low, your body uses negative feedback to bring it back to normal
6
Q
Describe how negative feedback works
A
- Receptors detects a stimulus that something is too high or too low
- The coordination centre receives and processes the information and then organises a response
- Effector produces a response which counteracts the change and restores the optimum level (increasing or decreasing
- Effector will continue to do this as long as they are stimulated by the coordination centre, they stop when they make the levels change too much and the receptors pick this up, restarting the whole process
