Planning for meals or snacks Flashcards

Q

What is eating about?

A

Eating is not about balancing a diet so that you do not gain weight; it is about eating so that your body is receiving the necessary calories it needs to keep up with your tasks for the day. The foods you consume may not make a visible impact on your outward appearance but often construction and destruction is taking place on the inside.

What kind of food should one be eating?

A

You should be selecting food that is nutrient-dense, which means it contains a lot of vitamins and minerals relative to the number of calories.

Q

Eating unhealthy foods for a snack vs healthy foods?

A

Take a candy bar, for example, if the candy bar contains 225 calories and only 1 percent of the daily recommended value of iron, was it worth eating? High calorie foods with low nutritional value increase your risk of disease and illness because your immune system is being weakened from the lack of essential nutrients. Instead of grabbing the candy bar, why don’t you try a nutrient dense snack like fresh fruit, low-fat yogurt, peanuts, raisins, or raw vegetables? Making a conscious decision to eat these kinds of snack is not because you “have to choose something healthy” but because you are being provided nutrients rather than meaningless calories.
