Emotion and behaviour Flashcards
An important part of mental and emotional health is being able to express what?
emotions
What are emotions?
emotions—reactions to a situation that involve your mind, body and behavior.
what are primary emotions? List some examples.
Primary emotions are emotions that are expressed by people in all cultures. Examples of primary emotions are happiness, sadness and fear.
what is grief?
Sadness that you feel when you lose a loved one is defined by the word grief. Grief is an emotion that requires time and special attention.
Anger is an emotion that can be helpful or harmful. How can it be helpful and harmful?
If anger helps you to deal with a problem by realizing what you have to do to solve it, then it can be helpful. For example, if you are angry because you see another member of your soccer team being praised by the coach, that anger may cause you to practice more at home so you can earn your coach’s praise. But, if you just take that anger and become jealous of the team member, it will be a destructive force in your life.
You experience fear when you feel threatened. Fear can be a valuable emotion because it helps you stay safe. give me an example of this
you might be afraid if you see someone run a red light while riding your bike so you immediately slow down. That fear kept you safe.
fear can be destructive if it is not based on real threats. give me an example
Unrealistic fears stop people from doing things they may enjoy. For example someone who might have a fear of water may never get close to a swimming pool in the summer.
What are learned emotions? what do they depend on?
Learned emotions are emotions whose expression depends on the social environment in which a person grows up.
Give me examples of learned emotions?
Learned emotions include love, guilt and shame. Love is the caring affection people have for family members and friends. People express love differently. Women tend to express their love very openly and with words. Men tend to express their love through actions. These differences are often learned in the culture.
Guilt and shame are related emotions, but are described in two different manners. What is the differnece between guilt and shame?
Guilt can be a helpful emotion if it makes you think about something you may have done wrong. You might feel guilty if you speak harshly to your little sister or if you forget to study and end up doing poorly on a quiz. Shame is different than guilt because it is more about the person than the action. When you feel guilty you think, “I did a bad thing.” When you feel ashamed, you think, “I am a bad person.”
What are coping strategies?
Coping strategies are ways to deal with uncomfortable feelings or situations.
When are coping stragies helpful and when are they dangerous?
Coping strategies are helpful when they improve a situation or allow a person to handle a situation in a better way. Coping strategies are harmful when they make a situation worse or a person is less able to handle a situation.
There are several different types of coping strategies. A defense mechanism is one of them, what is a defense mechanism?
A defense mechanism is a coping strategy that helps you to protect yourself from difficult feelings.
defense mechanisms:
- Denial - refusing to recognize an emotion or problem.
- Compensation - making up for weaknesses in one area by excelling in another area.
- Rationalization - making excuses for actions or feelings.
- Reaction formation - behaving in a way opposite to the way you feel.
- Projection - putting your own faults onto another person.
- Regression - returning to immature behaviors to express emotions.
How to control anger
First, recognize the source of your anger and accept your feelings. Once you do this, talk to the person with whom you are angry. Try not to place blame or accuse. You will have much more success at solving a problem if you approach the person more positively.
If you cannot solve the problem or if the other person doesn’t seem to listen to you; find a physical activity that you enjoy so you can release some of the negative emotions.
