Being safe at Home and School Flashcards
Unintentional injury is an unplanned injury. There are five key factors that have the ability to help in reducing unintentional injuries. They include:
- Awareness and Knowledge – Recognizing risks to your safety and knowing what actions to take can reduce the risk of unintentional injury.
- Ability – Be realistic when you judge your abilities and those of others.
- State of Mind – Be aware of your own condition and that of others. A person who is tired, rushed, distressed, or under the influence of drugs or alcohol is more likely to be injured or to cause injury to others.
- Environmental conditions – Consider the hazards in your environment that might cause an injury. For example the floor has just been mopped, do not run across it when the telephone rings.
What is The Accident Chain?
This is a chain of events that lead up to an accident. By understanding the chain of events, you can better prevent injuries by changing one part of a chain.
What does an accident chain look like?
- The situation
- The unsafe habit
- The unsafe action
- The accident
- The result
Provide an example of an accident chain:

- The unsafe action – Your friends get in the car to drive home.
