Epidemiology

A

peak incidence is young adults, slight increase in females, eruption lasts 8 weeks but can persist for 6 months, peaks in spring and the fall

A

herpes virus 7 most often postulated as the etiology

Clinical features

A

pink, scaly, oval appearing lesions with a collarette of a scale, “Christmas tree pattern”.

initial sign

A

herald patch 1-10cm in size precedes rash by 1-2 days, 50% of cases this occurs

ddx

A

secondary syphillis - will have lymphadenopathy, primary chancre… drug eruptions, tinea corporis, guttate psoriasis will have smaller lesions over entire body, PLEVA if lasts more than 6 mo

A

asymptomatic no treatment, patient reassurance, pruritus tx with antihistamines and topical steroids
