Teschovirus main disease
Porcine teschovirus
Tremovirus main disease
Avian encephalomyelitis
TESCHOVIRUS ENCEPHALOMYELITIS has also been called
Teschen D (higher virulence)
Talfan D (lower virulence)
Teschovirus ST
serotype 1: virulence variants
* Teschen: higher virulence
* Talfan: lower virulence
serotypes 2-11:
* milder clinical signs, healing
Teschovirus susceptible species
only pigs
Teschen & Talfan disease species differrence
- Teschen disease: clinical signs in all age groups
- Talfan disease: clinical signs below 4 months (mainly 3-8 weeks), maternal immunity
Teschovirus epidemiology
spread in : meat, brain, faeces, swill
shed in faeces for 7-8wks
resistant in environment (indirect inf)
Teschovirus Pathogenesis
PO/ nose (CNS)
prim. rep.: lYmphoid tissue of GIT
(asymptomatic, shedding virus)
viraemic phase
neural phase (2nd virus rep)
Teschen Disease CS
piglets: ataxia, flaccid paralysis, resp paralysis
adults: flaccid paralysis
some may recover (mvmt disorders)
Talfan Disease CS
piglets below 4mths (before weaning)
transient paralysis of hindlimbs
recover, ataxia can remain
Crumbling mouvements is a CS of which disease
Teschovirus serotype 2
Teschovirus Patho
no gross patho
histo: necrosis, degeneration
- grey matter of the brian (ST2 also white matter)
- ventral horns of the spinal cord
Teschovirus diagnosis
RT-PCR
Teschovirus DDx
diseases with CNS signs
rabies, CSF, ASF, Aujesky, Glassers
Teschovirus prevention/ control
notifiable in HU
not OIE listed since 2005
no vaccines anymore
Swine vesicular Disease causative agent
