photosynthesis Flashcards
photosynthesis
•the process by which green plants use light, carbon dioxide and water to make glucose and oxygen
steps in photosynthesis
- Sunlight absorbed by chlorophyll
2: energy from this used to split water into protons, electrons & oxygen
3: oxygen released into atmosphere
4: protons go to proton pool
5: electrons pass to chlorophyll
6: electron on the chlorophyll becomes energised by light
7: electron mix with protons from proton pool & carbon dioxide from atmosphere to form glucose
light stage
•needs light to happen
•doesn’t need enzymes
•occurs quickly
dark stage
•doesn’t need light to happen
•needs enzymes
•occurs slower
atp
•adenosine triphosphate
•ADP + P + energy = ATP
NADPH
•NADP+ + 2e- + H+ = NADPH
NADPH function
•NADPH can transport electrons and protons in the form of Hydrogen
ATP function
•can transport and release energy
light stage (cyclic) steps
1: Light split water into protons, electrons & oxygen
2: protons go to proton pool, oxygen released into atmosphere
3: Light absorbed by chlorophyll & energy pass to an electron
4: electron is passed from acceptor to acceptor releasing energy as it goes
5: ATP formed from released energy
6: electron returns to chlorophyll and repeat
light stage (non cyclic) steps
•same as cyclic except
•electron joins a proton (from proton pool) and NADP+ to form NADPH
what is the point of the light stage
•to make the products ATP and NADPH for the dark state
dark stage
•ATP, NADPH and Carbon dioxide aremixed together using enzymes to form glucose
• ATP supplies energy
•NADPH supplies Hydrogen
•Carbon dioxide supplies carbon and oxygen
a molecule that can provide electrons during photosynthesis
•water
