lyphatic system Flashcards
functions of lymphatic system
•maintains constant level of ECF
•filtering bacteria
•returns fluid to blood
•manufacture of lymphocytes
why kind of system is the lymphatic system
•one way system of dead ending vessels and lymph nodes
tissue fluid
•Tissue fluid builds up around cells in the body and helps transport things like glucose into the cells.
how does most tissue fluid return to the blood vessels
Most tissue fluid returns to the blood vessels through osmosis.
where do the rest of the tissue fluid go if not to the blood vessels
•The rest enters the lymph vessels where it mixes with white blood cells to form lymph.
lymph vessels
•are a bit like veins
lvalves but carry lymph to the shoulder regions (instead of blood) where it re- enters the blood.
lymph nodes
•along the lymph vessel
•contain lots of white blood cells •these help to kill bacteria.
glands
•clusters of nodes in the neck and under the armpit
two main vessels of the lymphatic system
•right lymphatic duct
•thoracic duct
