Q

In WX/RCT mode, gain is automatically set to____. The CYAN shaded area indicate_________

A

Auto gain

the RADAR signal is blocked by heavy rain before it reaches it’s full range (Areas of attenuation).

With RCT on the color code no longer matches rainfall rates such as Magenta= 2 in per hour.

Q

Is the EGPWS an additional type of radar that will paint obstacles and terrain that is seen on the radar return.

A

NO

The EGPWS relies on GPS position and a terrain/obstacle database.

Q

Describe the auto range and cell expansion mode of the EGPWS.

A

When an alert occurs the range is reset 5nm and the alert area becomes larger to get the pilot’s attention

Q

Above 2000 feet what symbol is used to coincide with a TCAS ‘TRAFFIC, TRAFFIC’ visual and audio alert? What is the time to contact?

A

Solid Yellow Circle.
30 seconds to contact

If below 2000’, altitude separation of less than 600’ will occur in 20 seconds, or the intruder is within 600’ and .2nm.
If above 2000’, then an altitude separation of 800’ will occur in 30 seconds, or the intruder is within 800’ and .55 nm.

15
Q

The RADAR auto gain is calibrated to preset rainfall rates. For example red is ____to___inches per hour and magenta is greater than_____inches per hour. Red and magenta levels should be _____.

A

red about 1/2 in to 2 inches per hour
magenta is greater than 2 inches per hour
avoided.

16
Q

What effect does landing gear down have on the TCAS and EGPWS?

A

TCAS-only symbols are shown and nearby aircraft symbols may appear erratic.
EGPWS-lowers the terrain alert threshold to 300 feet from 1200 feet.

17
Q

Are power lines included in the EGPWS database for obstacle alerts?

A

no

18
Q

How can the pilot get rid of the “Glide slope” alert?

A

Deselect ILS or P-ILS

19
Q

“GEAR TOO LOW” activates at what speed and altitude combination?

A

Below 150 agl and 60 IAS.

20
Q

To find severe thunderstorms (~30,000 ft) while flying at 5000 feet, on the 50nm scale you should tilt the RADAR to_____degrees up and set the gain to______.

A

~5 degrees and auto gain.
this angle aims the center of the 8 degree tall beam at 30,000 feet.
At 50nm the beam covers from 9000 to 51,000 feet.

To remove light rain use Manual gain set to about -18.

To center the beam at 30,000feet on other scales set:
100nm set to 2.5
25nm set to 10

Rule of thumb:
Range x tilt + alt = beam center alt. You will need to tilt 4 more degrees up to confirm above 30,000. (half the height of the 8 deg beam)

21
Q

What EGPWS alert is given with a significant sink after takeoff or missed approach?

A

” DON’T SINK, DON ‘ T SINK”

22
Q

Terrain Inhibit (as in an OSAP) has what effect?

A

Disables lookahead mode.

23
Q

The TCAS normally displays targets out to ____nm and ______feet above and below the aircraft.

A

18nm
2700 above and below

“Below” extends range 2700 above to 8700 below. “Above” selection is just the opposite.
