Pharm: Anti-psychotics/Anxiolytics/sedatives/ Flashcards
Antipsychotics
Calm the brain down
Tx Schizophrenia
1st Gen: D2 Blocker (Dopamine)
* Haloperidol
* Phenothiazines
2nd Gen: D & 5-HT Blocker (Dopamine & Serotonin)
* Clozapine
Antidepressants
Stimulate the CNS
For depression
SSRI:
SNRI/TCA:
MAOI:
Lithium
SSRI
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors
* Increase serotonin in synapse
* Antidepressant
Drugs:
* Fluoxetine
* Citalopram
* Trazodone
SNRI/TCA
Serotonin and NE reuptake inhibitor
* Antidepressant
Drugs:
* Amitriptyline
* Imipramine
MAOI
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors
* Dont use levonordephrine! Increase BP to much
* Antidepressant
Drugs:
* Phenelzine
* Tranylcypromine
Lithium
Tx Manic depression (bipolar)
Anxiolytics
Aka Sedatives
For anxiety or sedation
Benzodiazepines
Barbiturates
Benzodiazepines
Anxiolytic/Sedative
Increase GABA binding and Cl- ion influx to slow down the CNS
* ideal drug for oral sedation dentistry
* Propylene gycol induces thrombophelbitis in large veins
Drugs:
* Diazepam: 2-10 mg 1 hr b4 appt
* Triazolam
* Chlordiazepoxide
Benzodiazepines vs Barbiturates
Benzos:
* Increase therapeutic window
* Decrease Respiratory depresssion
* Decrease Addiction potential
* Safer
Barbituates
Anxiolytic/Sedative
Increase GABA binding & Cl ion influx to slow down CNS
* Same MOA as Benzos
* NOT ANALGESIC
Contraindications:
* Intermittent porphyria
* OD causes respiratory depressoin=Death
Drugs:
* ** Thiopental**: quick onset, short duration
General Anesthetics
The more soluble the agent in blood, the more you need to reach critical tension in the brain
Drugs:
* Halothane: caution w/hepatotoxcity
General Aneshetics: Stages
Stage 1: Analgesia
Stage 2: Delirium
Stage 3: Surgical Anesthesia
Stage 4: Medullary Paralysis
What causes Parkinson’s Disease?
Dopamine deficiency in the brain
* substantia nigra to striatum=main pathway
Benzodiazepines vs Barbituates
Benzos advantages vs barbiturates:
* less adiction potential
* Less profound CNS depression
* Larger therapeutic index
* less respiratory depression
Levodopa
Sympathomimetic:
* produces sympathetic stimulation in periphery
* Precursor to DOpamine
* Can cross BBB
