What instrument is this?

A mini sickle
Describe the mini sickle?
- A double ended point scaler
- Has two cutting edges on each blade for buccal & lingual embrasure surfaces (The V shaped valleys between teeth)
- Sharp end of the blade.
- Triangular in cross section
Where do you use the mini sickle?
Supra gingivally?
Why is the mini sickle used supragingivally?
As the pointed end of the instrument can damage the epithelium of the pocket.
What is this instrument?

The columbia curette
Describe the Columbia Curette?
- Doubled ended universal curette
- Two cutting edges on each blade.
- Has a spoon like curved edge of blade.
- Semi-circular cross section.
Where is the columbia curette used?
Subgingival scaling anywhere in the mouth.
What is the limitation of the columbia curette?
It has limited access to deep pockets.
If the blade is engaged at less than 45* it cannot remove the calculus.
