Perceptual Dysfunction Flashcards
What is perception?
Use of integration of sensory information into meaningful info
What does perception allow us to understand?
Relationship between our bodies and the environment
What does normal perception require?
Intact sensation
What part of the brain is responsible for perception?
Parietal lobe
What infarcts can cause perceptual dysfunction?
ACA, MCA, or PCA
What is the importance of perception?
Deficits may increase risk of injury
May impair motor function
Impacts motor learning
Impact prognosis of care
What are some signs that someone may be suffering from a perceptual problem?
Cannot carry out simple tasks
Difficulty shifting between tasks
Cannot follow one step commands
Takes a long time to do things or is impulsive
What is visual discrimination?
Process of recognizing depth, spatial relation between objects, and forms
What is apraxia?
Inability to perform tasks in the absence of sensory, motor, or coordination deficits
What is agnosia?
Inability to recognize familiar objects
What is one of the most common perceptual disorders you see in clinic?
Unilateral special neglect (on the left)
How can you test unilateral spatial neglect?
Albert’s cancellation test (drawing lines)
Draw an item
Point to body parts
What are some management strategies for unilateral spatial neglect?
Have a watch beep on affected side
Have a fan blow on them on affected side
Scanning training
Anosognosia
Inability to have awareness of deficits
What are some management strategies for visual discrimination?
Visual scanning
Slowing down
Amplify stimulation (tape on edge of steps)
