Acute Neuromotor Disorders Flashcards
What is an exacerbation or relapse in MS?
New or recurrent symptoms lasting more than 24 hours
What are factors that can cause a MS relapse?
Health deterioration
Infections
Disease of major organ systems
Stress
What is the goal during a MS relapse?
Shorten the duration of it
What are the treatments for MS relapse?
Corticosteroid therapy
Plasmaphersis
Disease modifying therapeutic agents
What affects do corticosteroids have on MS relapse?
Powerful anti inflammatory and immuno suppressive effects
When is plasmaphersis used in MS relapse?
In those who fail to respond to steroids (only used in relapsing-remitting MS)
How does disease-modifying therapeutic agents treat MS relapse?
Slows the immune system by decreasing inflammation
What are impairments in early stages of MS?
Motor symptoms present but don’t interfere with ADLs
What are intervention strategies in early MS?
Regular exercise
What are impairments in moderate stages of MS?
Min to mod activity/participation limitations
ADL with moderate independence
What are intervention strategies in the moderate stages of MS?
Assistive devices
What are impairments in late stages of MS?
Difficulty walking (bed bound)
Significant social and cognitive problems
What is Gillian barre syndrome?
Rapid development of symmetrical weakness, autonomic dysfunction, sensory deficits, and respiratory failure
How does weakness progress in Gillian barre syndrome?
Distal to proximal
When does Gillian barre syndrome peak?
2-4 weeks after onset (followed by 85% recovery rate)
