Interventions For Involuntary Contractions (2) Flashcards
Dyskinesia
Abnormal involuntary movements (damage to basal ganglia)
What are interventions for dyskinesia?
Botox
Surgical modalities (deep brain stimulator)
What is a deep brain stimulator?
Pacemaker for CNS (used to treat Parkinson’s)
Tremor
Involuntary, rhythmic, oscillatory movements of reciprocally innervated muscles (resting or active)
What are symptoms in huntingtons?
Chorea (most common)
Bradykinesia
Dystonia
Myoclonus
Tics
Dystonia
Persistent muscle contraction resulting in repetitive movements and unnatural positions of body (focal or generalized)
What are symptoms in Parkinson’s?
Resting tremor and Bradykinesia
Athetosis
Slow writhing movements typically involving the fingers, hands, toes, and tongue (purposeless)
Chorea
Random flow of activity from on body part to another (rapid and jerky)
Ballismus
Uncontrollable, violent, flailing movements of entire limb
Myoclonus
Brief, sudden, and rapid asymmetrical contractions
What are symptoms in essential tremor?
Action tremor seen in at least 1 arm during 4 tasks (interferes with ADLs)
What are symptoms seen in cerebral palsy?
Choreoathetosis and dystonia
What are symptoms seen in stroke?
Chorea and dystonia
