Interventions For Complete Paralysis (2) Flashcards
What are the expected functional outcomes for SCI injuries at C1-C4?
Total assist
What are the expected functional outcomes for SCI injuries at C5?
Still requires a great deal of assist
What are the expected functional outcomes for SCI injuries at C6-C8?
More independent (may require some assist)
What are the expected functional outcomes for SCI injuries at T1-T9?
Independent in all basic mobility (may need equipment)
Gait is variable
What are the expected functional outcomes for SCI injuries at T10-L1?
Independent in all basic mobility and gait is more likely
What are the expected functional outcomes for SCI injuries at L2-S5?
Independent in all (may need AD)
What are the main goals with complete and permanent paralysis?
Compensation or substitution
What are some compensatory movement strategies for paralysis?
Muscle substitution
Momentum
Head-hips relationship
What are some muscle substitutions used in paralysis?
Synergist, gravity, tension of passive structures, use of closed chain mechanisms in order to lock elbow
What is the heads-hip relationship?
Head moves one way and butt moves the other (used to move during transfers)
What do you want to strengthen the innervated muscles to in paralysis?
Beyond 5/5 for strength and endurance
What do you want to have balanced strength around in paralysis?
Shoulder girdle
What are some precautions if paralysis results from damage to C spine?
Avoid strong contraction of shoulder and avoid abduction or flexion >90°
What are some precautions if paralysis results from damage to L spine?
Avoid strong contraction of hip and avoid flexing >90°
