Pelvis, Urinary System, Reproductive System Flashcards
kidney
The kidneys function to filter our blood, keeping nutrients and fluids in the blood while removing waste products from the blood.
renal cortex
this is the outer portion of the kidney that makes up the cortical columns
renal pyramids
-this is the dark structures in the kidney that look kinda like triangles
hilum
this is where all the vessels enter the kidney
minor calyx
this is what collects the urine from a single pyramid.
- it will be right outside of the pyramid tip
renal medulla
this is the renal pyramids that are darker in the kidneys
renal columns
these are the lighter tissues that go between the renal pyramids
major calyx
these are where the minor calices drain
- this drains into the renal pelvis
ureter
this is the tube that carries urine down to the bladder
- the renal pelvis dumps into this
- these enter the inferor posterior aspec of the bladder at an angle
renel pelvis
this is what the major calices dump into
- it is thicker and is seen in the hilum and then turns into the ureter
renal artery
- this is lateral to the superior mesenteric artery and connects to the kidney
- and this branches off of the descending aorta
renal vein
these exit through the hilum and connects with the inferior vena cava
- it appears thin and floppy
superior mesenteric artery
- this branches off the descending aorta and it is inferior to the celiac trunk
inferior mesenteric artery
this is located further down on the descending aorta
-this one is smaller than the superior one
bladder
- some photos show this having some brown stuff in the middle
- it is going to be inferior to the uterus in the female
- it is going to be superior to the prostate in the male
urethra
(in the male)
the tube that carries urine from the bladder out through the penis
- the first portion is called the prostatic uretha which is closest to the bladder
-this portion is going through the prostate
-the second portion is the membranous urethra and that runs from the pelvic floor to the tip of the penis
(in the female)
- positioned anterior to the vagina
- it is much shorter in females than males because it doesn’t go through the penis
spongy urethra
this is the portion of the urethra that runs through the center of the penis
-through the bulb and corpus spongiosum
