Bones of the upper Extremities U3 Flashcards
acromial end
this is the end of the clavicle that articulates the acromion process of the scapula
Sternal end
this is the end of the clavicle that Articulates with the sternum
Conoid tubercle
- closer to the acromial end of the clavicle
Attachment site for the coracoclavicular ligament on the clavicle
Glenoid fossa
Articulates with the head of the humerus
- this is on the scapula
Coracoid process
Attachment site for the coracobrachialis, short head of the biceps brachii, & pectoralis minor muscles & coracoclavicular ligament on the scapula
Acromion process
Articulates with the clavicle, attachment for the middle part of the deltoid
- on the scapula
Scapular spine
Separates the supraspinous and infraspinous fossa, attachment for the deltoid and trapezius muscles
- on the scapula
Medial border
Attachment for the levator scapulae, rhomboid major, rhomboid minor, & serratus anterior (anterior portion of the medial border)
- on the scapula
Lateral border
Attachment for teres minor
- on the scapula
Inferior angle
Attachment site for the teres major muscle
- on the scapula
Superior angle
Attachment for the levator scapulae
- on the scapula
- this is the most superior portion that then curves and becomes horizontal
Subscapular fossa
Fossa on the anterior scapula that holds the subscapularis muscle
- on the scapula
Supraspinous fossa
Fossa on the posterior surface that holds the supraspinatus
- on the scapula
Infraspinous fossa
Fossa on the posterior surface that holds the infraspinatus
- on the scapula
Supraglenoid tubercle
Attachment for the long head of the biceps brachii
- on the scapula
Infraglenoid tubercle
below the glenoid fossa on the scapula
Attachment for the long head of the triceps
Suprascapular notch
Passageway for the suprascapular nerve
Head of humerus
Articulates with the glenoid fossa of the scapula
Anatomical neck
Just distal to the head of the humerus
Surgical neck
Common site for fractures of the humerus
Deltoid tuberosity
Attachment for the deltoid muscle
- on the humerus
Lesser tubercle on the humerus
Attachment for the subscapularis muscle (and teres major)
Greater tubercle on the humerus
Attachment for the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, and teres minor
intertubercular sulcus (groove)
Passageway for the tendon of the long head of the biceps; attachment for the latissimus dorsi and teres major muscles
- on the humerus
Radial groove
Radial nerve travels here on its course around the posterior humerus
Medial epicondyle of the humerus
Attachment site for muscles of the anterior forearm (flexors and pronator teres)
Lateral epicondyle of the humerus
Attachment site for muscles of the posterior forearm (extensors and supinator)
Lateral supracondylar ridge of the humerus
Attachment site for some posterior forearm muscles
Medial supracondylar ridge of the humerus
Attachment site for some anterior forearm muscles
Capitulum
Articulates with the head of the radius
Trochlea
on the distal end of the anterior humerus on the medial side
Articulates with the ulna
Radial fossa
Space for radius during elbow flexion
Coronoid fossa
this is above the capitulum
Space for the coronoid process of the ulna during elbow flexion
Olecranon fossa
- on the distal end of the posterior humerus
Space for the olecranon process of the ulna during elbow extension
Trochlear notch
Articulates with the trochlea of the humerus
- on the ulna
Olecranon process
- enters the olecranon fossa on the humerus during elbow extension
Attachment for the triceps brachii - on the ulna
Coronoid process
Attachment for ligaments of the elbow
- on the proximal end of the ulna and is below the trochlear notch
- on the ulna
Radial notch
site of the proximal articulation articulation with the head of the radius
- on the ulna
Head on the ulna
Articulates distally with the radius and with carpal bones
Styloid process of the ulna
Attachment for a ligament of the wrist
Head of the radius
Articulates with the ulna and humerus
Radial tuberosity
Attachment for the biceps brachii tendon
- this is located more proximal on the radius
- it is on the medial side of the radius
Styloid process of the radius
Attachment site for the brachioradialis muscle
Ulnar notch
Distal articulation with the ulna on the radius
carpometacarpal joints
these are the joints between the carpal bones and the metacarpal bones
metacarpophalangeal joints (MCP)
- these are the joints between the metacarpal bones and the proximal phalanges
proximal interphalangeal joints (PIP)
this is the joints between the proximal phalanges and the middle phalanges
- there is not one on the thumb
Distal interphalangeal joints (DIP)
- this is the joint between the middle and distal phalanges
Interphalangeal joint (IP)
- this is the joint in the thumb between the proximal and distal phalange in the thumb
