Q

Hi intensity discharge:

Electric arc is passed through high-pressure mercury vapor that produces ultraviolet and visible light. Primarily blue/green color. Moderately high efficacy at 30–50 lm/W. Life of 24,000 hours. Used for large area overhead lighting in factories/warehouses/sports complexes/streetlights.

15
Q

High intensity discharge:

Similar to mercury vapor except halides of metal are added to the arc tube. Increased efficiency at 50–100 lm/W. Life of 10,000 hours. Produces a wider, more natural light.

A

Metal halide HID lamp

16
Q

High intensity discharge:

Produces light by passing an electric arc through hot sodium vapor. Arc tube must be ceramic to resist hot sodium. High efficacy at 80–140 lm/watt. Life of 24,000 hours. Wide variety of color rendition.

A

High pressure sodium HID lamp

17
Q

High intensity discharge:

Operates like a fluorescent lamp and requires a ballast. Highest efficacy at 150 lm/W. Requires a brief warm-up. To reach full brightness. Monochromatic yellow light seen in parking garages and streetlights.

A

Low pressure sodium HID lamp

18
Q

High intensity discharge:

Solid-state lighting. Bulbs without a filament, plasma, or gas. Low in power consumption with a long lifespan. Diodes a minute light when connected in a circuit. Run a DC power. Used for flashlights, signage, sustainable lighting, phones, video production.

A

Light a meeting diode (LED) HID lamp
