Parts Of The Brain Flashcards
Thalamus
Relay centre for incoming sensory information
Cerebrum
Involved in sensing, thinking, learning, emotion, consciousness and voluntary movement.
Amygdala
Lambic system structure involved in emotion and aggression.
Hippocampus
Limbic system structure involved in learning and memory
Cerebellum
Co-ordinates fine muscle movement, balance
Spinal chord
Transmits information between brain and rest of body. Handles simple reflexes
Reticular formation
Group of fibers that carries stimulation related to sleep and arousal through brain stem.
Medulla
Regulates vital functions such as breathing and circulation
Pons
Involved in sleep and arousal
Pituitary gland
Regulates endocrine glands
Hypothalamus
Regulates basic biological needs: hunger, thirst, temp control
Corpus callousness
Bridge of fibers passing info between the two cerebral hemispheres
Hindbrain
The lowest and most primitive level of the brain
Midbrain
Contains clusters of sensory and motor neurons
Damage to hippocampus
Difficulty remembering
Damage to Broca’s
Can understand language but cannot properly form words or produce speech.
Damage to Wernicke’s area
Wernicke’s aphasia. Have difficulty understanding spoken language but are able to produce sounds, phrases and word sequences. Not language because no info is conveyed.
CT
Computerized tomography
MRI
Magnetic resonance imaging
Left hemisphere
Primary specialization for language
Right hemisphere
Primary specialization is for spatial processing
Hypothalamus
Major role in motivation and emotion. Sexual behaviors, temp regulation, sleeping, eating and drinking and aggression
Four lobes
Frontal- movement
Temporal-auditory
Parietal- somatosensory
Occipital-vision
meninges
Pia
Arachnoid
Dura
