[Part 2]- B8- Photosynthesis โ๏ธ๐ Flashcards
Why are carnivorus plants, like the venus flytrap adapted to their environment ?
- since Venus Flytraps live in poor soil, they are healthier if they get nutrients from insects.
Explain how carnivorous plants are adapted to their environment.
- The leaves of Venus Flytrap open wide and on them are short, stiff hairs called trigger or sensitive hairs.
- When anything touches these hairs, the two lobes of the leaves snap shut, in less than a second, trapping whatever is inside.
Further explain how carnivorous plants are adapted to their environment.
Hint: object isnโt food
- If the object isnโt food, e.g., a stone, or a nut, the trap will reopen in about twelve hours and โspitโ it out.
- When the trap closes over food the cilia, keep larger insects inside.
- In a few minutes the trap will shut tightly and form an air-tight seal in order to keep the digestive fluids inside and bacteria out.
How can limiting factors be exploited, to increase the rate of photosynthesis ?
- a hydroponic growing system- the method of growing plants in aerated solutions with just the right balance of minerals.
How can limiting factors be exploited, to increase the rate of photosynthesis ?
- Thermostatically controlled vents: if the temperatures get to hot, the vents open
- this is because, temperatures above 45*c denatures enzymes.
How can limiting factors be exploited, to increase the rate of photosynthesis ?
- Artificial lighting: photosynthesis can only take place during the day.
- With artificial lighting, photosynthesis happens 24 hours a day, increasing the rate of photosynthesis.
How can limiting factors be exploited, to increase the rate of photosynthesis ?
- Irrigation system: Brings water to places where water is absent ornot in enough abundance.
- The goal of an irrigation system, is to supply just the right amount of water without overdoing it and damaging the soil or vegetation.
Why do farmers want to increase the rate of photosynthesis ?
- farmers want to increase the rate of photosynthesis, since this increases the yields of crops produced.
- farmers can light and heat their greenhouses, as well as adding extra carbon dioxide.
What does the extra cost of artificially increasing the rate of photosynthesis, have to be justified by ?
- the extra cost has to be justified by the increase in yield, if farmers are going to increase the rate of photosynthesis artificially.
- some gardeners might use oil burners instead, releasing heat and carbon dioxide at the same time.
What is a propane burner ?
- a propane burner, burns hydrocarbons, and produces carbon dioxide- which can then be used to artificially increase the rate of photosynthesis
What is glucose ?
- glucose, is a simple sugar that is produced during photosynthesis and serves as an immediate source of energy for the plant.
