paper chromatography - chemisrty Flashcards

1
Q

why do we NOT use a pen when we are drawing the baseline?

A

pen is insoluble which means it won’t dissolve in the water

Q

what are the two cautions we take when we are doing the experiment?
why?

A

make sure you place a lid on top so the solvent doesn’t evaporate
make sure the solvent is shallow so that the ink doesn’t dissolve

Q

describe the process by which chromatography happens.

A

the solvent seeps up the filter paper with the ink
there is then a separation of the substances
each ink moves 1 up the filter paper at a different rate
any of the insoluble ink remains in the baseline
when the solvent is nearly at the top, you take it out and leave it to dry.
