Cell biology 2 Flashcards
what is the function of the nucleus?
contains genetic material controlling the activities of the cell
what is the function of cytoplasm?
gel-like substance where chemical reactions take place
what is the function of the cell membrane?
holds the cell together and controls what goes in and out of the cell.
what is the function of mitochondria?
where most the reactions take place for aerobic respiration. (contains enzymes)
what is the function of ribosomes?
where proteins are made within the cell
PLANT CELL ONLY
what is the function of the rigid cell wall?
it supports the cell and strengthens it
PLANT CELL ONLY
what is the function of a permanent vacuole?
its a weak solution of sugar and salts containing cell sap
PLANT CELL ONLY
what is the function of chloroplasts?
where photosynthesis takes place
what is therapeutic cloning?
process of making an embryo (having the same genetic material as the parent) in order to produce stem cells. that can be used to treat the patient.
what are two advantages of embryonic stem cells?
easy to extract from embryo
they can produce any type of cell
what are two advantages of adult stem cells?
no embryo is destroyed so it is not an ethical issue
will not cause rejection to the body because it is taken from the person that is being treated.
what are two disadvantages of embryonic stem cells?
ethical issues that embryonic stem cells still have potential life within them
body does not recognise the cell so will reject it
what are the two disadvantages of an adult stem cell?
its difficult to extract from tissue
produces only a few types of cells
