Heart and blood vessels /blood - organisation - biology Flashcards
What is the job of the heart?
it pumps blood around the body in a double circulatory system
What is gas exchange?
its a physical process when gases move passively from diffusion across a surface
Where does the right ventricle pump blood to?
the lungs where gas exchange takes place
Where does the left ventricle pump blood?
Around the body
what are the 5 blood vessels associated with the heart?
The aorta, vena cava, pulmonary artery, pulmonary vein and
coronary arteries
what is the natural resting heart rate controlled by?
where is it located?
What does it act as?
a group of cells
located in the right atrium
it acts as a peacemaker
what 3 different types of blood vessels does the body contain?
- arteries
- veins
- capillaries.
what benefits do alveoli have?
They have a large surface area
where does the carbon dioxide in the capillaries come from?
Blood plasma
what are the benefits of the alveoli being moist?
it allows the gases to dissolve - making it easier to dissolve
why does the deoxygenated blood not have oxygen?
it has used it all up for the tissues
what are the 2 adaptations alveoli have?
what does this mean?
They have one layer of cells just like the capillary next to them (increasing the rate of diffusion)
The alveoli have oxygen (making a perfect concentration gradient for the oxygen to move into the deoxygenated blood)
where is the deoxygenetaed and oxygeneated blood stored?
In the blood capillaries
