cell biology 3 Flashcards
what is differentiation?
when a cell changes to become specialised for its job
what is diffusion?
diffusion is the spreading of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
why would a higher temperature give a faster diffusion rate?
the particles have more energy to move around faster
what small molecules can diffuse through the cell membrane?
oxygen, glucose, amino acids and water
what is osmosis?
osmosis is the movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from a region of high water concentration to a region of low water concentration
what two sub-cellular organisms does prokaryotic cells not have?
mitochondria and chloroplasts
why cant root hair cells use diffusion to take up minerals from the soil?
there is a higher concentration of minerals than the soil
why is active transport used instead of diffusion?
diffusion is a passive transport and it works slower
what is concentration gradients?
When the concentration of particles is higher in one area than another.
what is the purpose of active transport in the gut?
when there is a lower concentration of nutrients in the gut but a higher concentration of nutrients in the blood.
what is active transport?
The movement of molecules from a lower concentration to a higher concentration
