Digestive enzymes/system - Biology - organisation Flashcards
what does amylase break down starch into?
into maltose
what is the carbohydrates enzyme
amylase
where can amylase be found?
the small intestine, pancreas and salivary glands
what enzyme do the salivary glands have?
salivary amylase
what are the 3 functions of the stomach?
churn and contract food
produces pepsin helping to break down proteins
contains hydrochloric acid - killing bacteria
what are the 2 functions of bile?
emulsify fat
nuetralise stommach acids
what is the job of the pancreas?
produces protease, lipase and amylase which is then pushed into the small intestine
what are the 3 functions of the villi?
There are many villi giving them a large surface area to transport the molecules into the bloodstream more quicker
They have a single layer of cells on their surface meaning that diffusion is a short distance
They have a good blood supply maintaining the concentration gradient
what does the single layer of surface cells in the small intestine do?
makes the diffusion rate shorter
what is the job of the large intestine?
stores waste products while the remaining water is absorbed back into the body
then is transferred into the rectum
what is the proteins enzyme?
protease
what does protease break down protein into?
amino acids
where can protease be found?
small intestine, pancreas and stomach
what is the lipids enzyme?
lipase
what does lipase break down lipids into?
fatty acids +glycerol
