Aerobic and anaerobic respiration - biology - bioenergetics Flashcards
what is the definition of cellular respiration?
it is the transfer of energy from glucose continuously in all living organisms
what are the 3 main things human organisms need energy for?
maintain body temp
muscular contractions (to move around)
change smaller molecules into larger molecules (chains of amino acids into protein)
How is energy released from glucose?
the glucose breaks so the energy bursts out.
Where does glucose come from?
photosynthesis
what is the formula for aerobic respiration?
glucose + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water
which sub-cellular structure does aerobic respiration take place in?
in the mitochondria
when do we use oxygen and when do we not use oxygen (aerobic or anaerobic)
aerobic (with oxygen)
anaerobic (without oxygen)
where does aerobic respiration take place in?
plants and living organisisms
what is the equation for anaerobic respiration in humans?
Glucose = lactic acid
When do humans use anaerobic respiration
what happens
They use it when they have to e.g., running
they loose a lot of oxygen, lactic acid builds up and they need to meet the demands of aerobic respiration
Give two reasons why anaerobic respiration is inefficient.
There is a build-up of lactic acid that needs to be removed
not all the energy is released form the glucose meaning some are still trapped
What is the formula for the other type of respiration that includes yeast and plants?
Glucose = Ethanol + carbon dioxide
what do we use Ethanol for?
what do we use carbon dioxide for?
We use ethanol for alcoholic drinks
The carbon dioxide created ting bubbles in the bread making it fluffy
what is anaerobic respiration in yeast cells called?
Fermentation
What is metabolism?
Metabolism is all the chemical reactions in an organisism
