Group 7/0 non-metals - chemistry Flashcards
What is the reactivity series of halogens?
They decrease as you go down the group
Why does the reactivity series decrease as you go down the group?
The atomic weight increases
The outermost electrons are further away from the positive nucleus
The forces of attraction to pull an extra electron become weaker making it less reactive
What do halogens form when they react with metals?
They form ionic compounds (halides) and all the endings of the group 7 elements end with ides
What do halogens form when they react with non-metals?
They form covalent bonds and can form covalent bonds with themselves as they are diatomic
What are the 5 properties of noble gases?
They are single atoms
They are full outer shells
They are unreactive
They are colourless
They are non-flammable
What is the boiling point of noble gases?
The boliling point increases as you go down the group
What are the melting and boiling points of the halogens
They increase as you go down the group
