Oxygen Flashcards
Oxygen Class
Gas
Oxygen Description
Odourless, tasteless, colourless gas necessary for life
Oxygen Presentation
D,E, or F cylinders, coloured black with white shoulders
CD cylinder; white cylinder Medical Gas
Oxygen Administration
Inhalation via:- high concentration reservoir (non-rebreather) mask- simple face mask- venturi mask- tracheostomy mask- nasal cannula- bag valve mask
Oxygen Indications
Absent/inadequate ventilation following an cute medical or traumatic event.
SpO2 < 94% adults and < 96% paeds
SpO2 < 92% for patients with acute exacerbation of COPD
SpO2 < 90% for patients with acute onset of Pulmonary Oedema
Oxygen Contraindications
Bleomycin (Cancer Drug) lung injury
Oxygen Dosage
Adult:
Cardiac / Respiratory arrest or sickle cell crisis: 100%
Life Threats identified in Primary survey: 100% until reliable SpO2 of 94% - 98%
COPD: titrate to 92%
Everything else: titrate to 94%- 98%
Paed:
Cardiac/respiratory arrest or Sickle cell crisis: 100%
Life Threats Prim Surv: 100% titrate to 96% -98%
Neonate Resus (<4 weeks): COnsider supplementary O2 (≤30%)
Everything else: titrate to 96% - 98%
Oxygen Pharmacology
Oxygenation of tissue/organs
Oxygen Side Effects
Prolonged use of O2 with chronic COPD patients may lead to reduction in ventilation stimulus
Oxygen Additional Info
A written record must be made of what oxygen therapy is given to every patient. Documentation recording oximetry measurements should state whether patient is breathing air or a specified dose of supplemental oxygen. consider humidifier if O2 therapy for paed patients is > 30 mins duration. Avoid naked flames, powerful oxidising agent.
Caution with paraquat poisoning, administer O2 if SpO2 <92%.
