Nutrients. Sugars: Anti-hypoglycaemic
Glucose Gel Presentation
Glucose gel in a tube or sachet
Glucose Gel Administration
Buccal Administration (BU) Administer gel to the inside of the patient's cheek and gently massage the outside of the cheek
Glucose Gel Indications
Hypoglycaemia
Blood Glucose Level < 4mmol/L
Blood glucose <4 mmol/L
Glucose Gel Contraindications
KSAR
Glucose Gel Dosages
Adult: 10 - 20g buccal
Paed:
Newborn Neonate: 2 - 4 ml iif blood glucose ≤2.6mmol/L
≤ 8yrs: 5 - 10g buccal
> 8yrs: 10 - 20g buccal
Recheck Blood Glucose and repeat after 15 mins if required
Glucose Gel Side Effects
May cause vomiting in patients under the age of five if administered too quickly
Glucose Gel Additional Info
Glucose gel will maintain glucose levels once raised but should be used secondary to Dextrose or Glucagon to reverse hypoglycaemia.
Proceed with caution:
- patients with airway compromise
- altered level of consciousness
