Orthotics Flashcards
What is a Halo Vest Orthosis?
Invasive cervical-thoracic orthosis fully restricting cervical motion. 4 pins inserted into patients skull
-used for SCI
What is a Milwaukee Orthosis?
pelvis to upper chest to correct scolosis
What is a Taylor Brace?
thoracolumbarsacral orthosis that limits trunk flexion and extension through a 3-point control design
What is TLSO?
prevents all trunk motion for post-surgical stabilization
What is a foot orthosis?
Semirigid or rigid insert worn inside a shoe that corrects foot alignment and improves function. May also relieve pain
What do Solid AFOs control?
Where is the trim line?
pg. 135
- control ankle pf/df and eversion/inversion
- trim line anterior to malloli
What is the purpose of a Posterior Leaf Spring AFO?
Pts need to have control of what motion in order to use?
Where is the trim line?
- assists with dorsiflexion and prevents foot drop
- pt needs to have adequate medial/lateral control
- trim line posterior to malloli (NOT AS MUCH CONTROL)
What is the purpose for a floor reaction AFO?
-assists with knee extension during stance through positioning of calf band and/or positioning of the ankle
What is the purpose of a Craig-Scott Knee-ankle-foot Orthosis?
designed specifically for a person with paraplegia. Allows a person to stand with a posterior lean of trunk
What is a Reciprocating Gait Orthosis?(RGO)
Derivative of the HKAFO that incorportates a cable system that assists with advancement of lower extremities during gait. When the patient shifts weight to the selected LE the opposite side is advanced
-Used for paraplegia
What is a Parapodium?
standing frame designed to allow a patient to sit when necessary. Ambulation achieved by shifting weight and rocking the base across the floor
-used primarily by PEDIATRIC population
What do heel wedges treat and where are 2 placements of them? (AKA rearfoot posting)
- Treat symptoms associated with pes planus or pes cavus
- Heel wedge can be applied to the medial heel (varus post) to prevent excessive hindfoot eversion or to the lateral heel (valgus post) to prevent excessive hindfoot inversion
what are 2 common uses of heel lifts?
- take pressure off achilles tendon
2. limit effects of leg length descrepancy
What are 2 possible conditions to use heel cushions for?
Soft heel insert
- calcaneal spur
- plantar fasciitis
what is a Heel Cup and what are 2 conditions it is used for?
a RIGID insert that covers the plantar surface of the calcaneus and extends upwards on all 3 sides, helps stabilize the calcaneus in a neutral position as well as provide shock absorption
- calcaneal spur
- plantar fasciitis
