Orthopedic Surgical Considerations Flashcards
What post-op motion restriction may someone have following a laminectomy?
no motion into extension
What muscle is often detached for a total shoulder arthoplasty and what are a patients post-op restrictions as a result?
Subcapularis
NO extension and external rotation
How are rotator cuff tears graded?
- Depth - partial or full
2. width - small(<1cm), medium (1-3cm), large (3-5cm), and massive (>5cm)
What portion of the Labrum is repaired with a Bankart Repair?
anterior labrum
If the posterior capsule is stabilized what position will the patient’s sling be in?
“hand shake” or neutral shoulder rotation
Should therapists wait for full ROM before beginning strengthening exercises for a shoulder stabilization procedure?
no! don’t be overly aggressive with ROM, cause trying to build stability in the capsule
Are femoral neck fractures and intertrochanteric hip fractures capular or extracapsular?
neck –> Capsular so may affected blood supply
Intertrochanteric –> extracapsular so blood supply not affected
When is an ACL graft most vulnerable after surgery?
at 6-8 weeks because as teh tendon transforms into ligamentous tissue, it actually becomes weaker before it gets stronger
Why are lateral ankle reconstructions performed?
due to complete tear of anterior talofibular ligaments or calcaneofibular ligaments
Recent research for achilles tendon repair shows that the achilles should be casted in what position and what about weight bearing restrictions?
should be casted in neutral and partial weight bearing should be allowed sooner which leads to less restricted motion in the long term
What procedure is done for stabilizing shoulder instability?
Capsular Shift, cut the capsule that is stretched and overlap it to reduce the stretch of the capsule.
