Amputations and Prosthetics Flashcards
What are the 8 types of UE amputations?
- Forequarter
- Shoulder dislocation
- Transhumeral
- Elbow disarticulation
- Transraidial
- Wrist disarticulation
- Partial hand
- Digital amputation
What is surgical removal of the upper extremity including the shoulder girdle?
Forequarter
What is surgical removal of the UE through the shoulder?
Shoulder disarticulation
What is surgical removal of the upper extremity proximal to the elbow joint?
Transhumeral
What is surgical removal of the lower arm and hand through through the elbow joint?
Elbow disarticulation
What is surgical removal of the upper extremity distal to the elbow joint?
Transradial
What is surgical removal of the hand through the wrist joint?
Wrist disarticulation
What is surgical removal of a portion of the hand and/or digits at either the transcarpal, transmetacarpal or transphalangeal level?
Partial hand
What is surgical removal of a digit at either the metacarpophalangeal, proximal interphalangeal or distal interphalangeal level?
Digital Amputation
What are the 9 types of LE amputation?
- hemicorporectomy
- Hemipelvectomy
- Hip Disarticulation
- Transfemoral
- Knee disarticulation
- Transtibial
- Syme’s
- Transverse Tarsal (Chopart’s)
- Tarsometatarsal (Lisfranc)
What is surgical removal of the pelvis and both lower extremities?
Hemicorporectomy
What is surgical removal of one half of the pelvis and lower extremity?
Hemipelvectomy
What is surgical removal of the lower extremity from the pelvis?
Hip Disarticulation
What is surgical removal of the lower extremity above the knee joint?
Transfemoral
What is surgical removal of the lower extremity through the knee joint?
Knee disarticulation
What is surgical removal of the lower extremity below the knee joint?
Transtibial
What is surgical removal of the foot at the ankle joint with removal of the malleoli?
Syme’s
What is amputation through the talnavicular and calcaneocuboid joints. The ampulation preserves the plantarflexors, but sacrifices the dorsiflexors often resulting in an equinus contracture?
Transverse Tarsal
What is the surgical removal of the metatarsals. The amputation preserves the dorsiflexors and plantarflexors?
Tarsometatarsal (Lisfranc)
What are the 4 types of of post-operative dressings?
- Rigid (plaster of paris)
- Non-weight bearing rigid removable limb protectors
- Semi-Rigid (unna paste, air splint)
- Soft (ace warp, shrinker)
K0 ability, knee unit, foot/ankle assembly
- prosthesis will not enhance quality of life
- Not eligible for prosthesis
K1 ability, knee unit, foot/ankle assembly
-Transfers, ambulate on level surfaces, fixed cadence, limited or unlimited household ambulator
Knee: single axis or constant friction mechanism
Foot/ankle: SACH, single axis
K2 ability, knee unit, foot/ankle assembly
-Traverse low-level barriers: curbs, stairs, uneven surfaces, limited community ambulator
Knee: polycentric, constant friction mechanism
Ankle: Flexible-keel foot, multi-axial foot/ankle
K3 ability, knee unit, foot/ankle assembly
-Variable cadence ambulator, unlimited community ambulator, traverse most environmental barriers, prosthetic use beyond simple locomotion
Knee: hydraulic/pnuematic, microprocessor, variable friction mechanism
Foot: energy storing, dynamic response foot, multi-axial foot/ankle
K4 ability, knee unit, foot/ankle assembly
-Exceeds basic ambulation skills, exhibits high impact stress, or energy levels, typical of child, athlete, or active adult
Knee: any system
Ankle: any system
