Organ Systems Flashcards
Levels of Human Structure
Name all Organ Systems
Integumentary, Skeletal, Muscular, Nervous, Endocrine, Circulatory, Lymphatic, Respiratory, Digestive, Urinary, Male and Female Reproductive
Nervous System
Main organs = Brain, spinal cord, nerves, ganglia
Main function:
Rapid internal communication, coordination, motor control and sensation
Endocrine System
Releasing hormones that result in long term changes in the activities of organ systems
Main organs = pituitary gland, pineal gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, thymus, adrenal glands, pancreas, testes, ovaries
Main functions:
Hormone production, internal chemical communication and coordination
Respiratory System
Delivery of oxygen to where gas exchange can occur between the air and circulating blood
Main organs = Nose, lungs, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi
Main functions = absorption of oxygen, release of CO2
Digestive System
Processing of food and absorption of organic nutrients, minerals, vitamins, and water
Main Organs = teeth, tongue, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, liver, gallbladder, pancreas
Main functions = nutrient breakdown and absorption
Liver controls metabolism of carbs, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals
Urinary System
Main organs = Kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra
Main functions = Elimination of excess water, salts, and waste products, controls pH of body fluids
Integumentary System
Main organs = Skin, hair, nails, glands
Main functions: protection, water retention, thermoregulation, sensation
Skeletal System
Main Organs = Bones, Cartilages, ligaments
Main functions: support, movement, blood formation
Muscular System
Main organs = all muscle
Main Functions = Movement, stability, communication, heat production
Lymphatic System
Main organs = Lymph nodes, Lymphatic vessels, thymus, spleen, tonsils
Main functions = defense against illness, production of immune cells, detection of pathogens
Circulatory System
Main Organs = Heart, blood vessels
Main functions = distribution of nutrients, oxygen, electrolytes, heat, immune cells, and antibodies
Female Reproductive System
Main Organs = Ovaries, uterine tubes, uterus, vagina, mammary glands
Main functions = production of eggs, fertilization and fetal nourishment, birth, lactation,
Male Reproductive System
Main Organs: Testes, penis, prostate gland, etc
Main Functions: Production and Delivery of Sperm, secretion of sex hormones
